The question of whether Game Pass will use the policy it has been implementing for a while on PlayStation has been in the minds for a while. In the end, a clear explanation came about this. But for PS Plus users, it may be disappointing. Because it’s not news they’ll be very happy about.
New post-launch games won’t be coming to PS Plus right away
Since the success of Microsoft’s Game Pass, the question has always been asked, whether or rather when, Sony will use the “post-launch available” feature for new games. In an interview with the PlayStation independent division head, he states that the company will focus on the premium version in the games that come out. In short, Sony will not add same-day versions to the PlayStation Plus structure.
Shuhei Yoshida, Head of PlayStation’s Independent Developer Initiatives, recently spent a long time giving talks about Sony’s PlayStation Plus services at GI Live 2022. According to its users, the reconfigured PlayStation Plus is suitable as a backdrop for the same-day release for games, but that’s not Sony’s plan. Instead, Yoshida shared that the company will continue to release and distribute new games in the same way, while Sony will continue its approach to keeping AAA games Premium.

Yoshida actually shared a subtle detail, “We believe that the premium versions of the games are exclusive after launch. Maybe three months, six months or three years after the game comes out, it will be included in the Plus when sales drop. That’s when PS Plus can help ensure that these depreciated games reach a newer, wider audience.”
Using this method effectively, Yoshida thinks it allows developers to have more say over the lifecycle of a game. Once the games have their sales dropped, they may come to the Extra section of PS Plus. Then, when it completes its life in this section, it will move to cheaper parts of PS Plus and thus the mass of the game will increase gradually. This method allows the game to constantly find a player and at the same time generate more revenue than is possible.
Yoshida argues that the immediate addition of games will break the “virtuous cycle.” He thinks that the investment in studios will decrease in this kind of work and that games with lower budgets will be released. Let’s see how much success this Sony’s policy will have against its biggest competitor in the sector.
