The news that Electronic Arts is considering dropping the FIFA name for years is actually of great importance for the future of the series. The series started as FIFA International Soccer in 1993 and came out a year later under the name FIFA Soccer 95, and continued with the names of the year after that. So it’s a 28-year history of the FIFA name in question.
However, it seems that FIFA has decided to increase the money it earns from its deal with Electronic Arts, which has also frustrated EA. He probably thought, “They can’t leave us anyway,” FIFA.
According to reports, FIFA is asking for more than double the previous agreement to renew the deal. The New York Times article said the new deal would cost EA an extra $1 billion over the four-year period between World Cups. FIFA also wanted to narrow the exclusive limits of EA because EA Sports wanted to use other FIFA-related monetary methods, including NFT. However, FIFA wants to take advantage of some of these monetaryization methods, perhaps partly because of this, they have increased the cost.
But here comes the question. If Electronic Arts renounces the FIFA name and goes by the name EA Sports FC, which it applies for trademark rights, will another broadcaster/developer come out and get the FIFA name? That’s when it’s chaos.
