Mortal Kombat is one of the few productions that comes to mind when it comes to fighting games. The game, which has a very old history in its history, still maintains its popularity among the players. John Tobias, the producer of the game, explained how the logo of the game, which is among the legends of the fighting world, with an iconic value like himself, emerged.
Here’s a recently discovered image of the very first drawing of #MortalKombat’s dragon icon. I designed the icon as both a symbol of our game and its fictional tournament… (thread) #MK30 pic.twitter.com/vVIDr4K9aP

The original drawing of the iconic dragon logo was shared recently. Even more, how the image was created and how the logo, drawn with a pen and paper in the early nineties, was digitized. The game’s designer and comic book artist shared the first version of the project and the inspiration behind it on Twitter. The idea of using a dragon for this fictional tournament came from the original title of the game. When Mortal Kombat was still in the project phase, it was called “Dragon Attack”.

The name Dragon Attack was a nod to the love of Ed Boom, another producer of the project, for the band Queen and their song of the same name (Dragon Attack). A lot of work was done on the logo before the name was changed. Tobias wanted something to represent the fighting tournament, which was fictional, and something that would brand the series. A dragon logo was designed inspired by the yin yang symbol because it depicted the balance and harmony between life and death due to the deadly nature of the tournament.
This resulting logo first entered into consideration among themselves. However, when Tobias’ sister saw the logo, she likened it to a sea horse, and then the logo almost went to waste. The real digitalization story of the logo drawn in pencil is quite meaningful. The logo was first videotaped and then tracked with pixels to use in the game and transferred to the digital platform. This year marks the 30th anniversary. For the series celebrating its anniversary, Tobias’ post gave us an interesting behind-the-scenes look at one of the most iconic game franchises ever.
