Modern Warfare 2 comes with mandatory phone verification. Activision has adapted Bizzard’s reaction-attracting system to its own game. Blizzard, which apologized for the Overwatch 2 server issues, asked newly created Overwatch 2 accounts to link their phone numbers to the system. The aim here is to be able to send SMS directly to users in case of any security problems (change of password, suspicious attempts to log into the account). The system also aims to allow players to recover their accounts without having to enter a password.

However, the system could not be used by certain prepaid numbers, preventing players from entering the game. That’s why Blizzard removed the SMS system from Overwatch 2, but for now, Modern Warfare 2 seems to have no intention of changing its mind. According to the detail that PCGamer noticed, Blizzard’s support page on the subject states that “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, newly created Overwatch 2 accounts and Modern Warfare accounts will require a phone number verification system.”
Time will tell if Activision will reverse this decision, but if it insists, this system, which affects certain users in Overwatch 2, could give many times more players a headache.
