Nighdive Studios, the owner of the System Shock IP, has clarified the status of the System Shock 3, which has been silent for a long time. However, he claimed that the arrival of the sequel was entirely up to Tencent.
System Shock 3 had been in development for several years in the hands of the Otherside Entertainment team, which was led by Paul Neurath and Warren Spector, the developers of the original SS game, before disappearing completely in 2020. Then, a statement was published on Otherside’s official website claiming that Tencent would “take the System Shock series completely forward.”
The fate of the System Shock series is in Tencent’s hands
Despite an analysis on LinkedIn suggesting that almost all of the development team had left the studio, Otherside hasn’t made a statement on the matter in two years. Speaking to VGC at gamescom, Nightdive Studios CEO Stephen Kick claimed that the rights to the game, which was initially given to Otherside, were later sold to Chinese giant Tencent. So whether the third game would be made or not was entirely in Tencent’s hands.
“When we first acquired the franchise rights, we licensed the rights to the third game to Warren and Paul on the Otherside,” Kick said. They then sold the rights to the game to Tencent.” He also stressed that they could make a remake of the first and second game, but that Tencent had all the rights to the third game.
If Tencent decides to develop the third game and continue, we may see new games for the series in the future. But first, System Shock 3, which returns to the snake story , needs to come across somewhere.
On the one hand, Nightdive is developing a long-awaited System Shock game that has been in development since 2016 and still has not been announced. While we haven’t heard from Tencent and Otherside about the sequel, Nightdive says they’ll definitely be working on more of an SS game.
