Sony acquired Insomniac Games about two years ago, which did a pretty solid job with Marvel’s Spider-Man. Currently working on Ratchet & Clank: Separate Worlds, Insomniac Games is also the developer of Sunset Overdrive, which debuts exclusively on Xbox and then comes to PC. Sony said that the rights to this brand were also transferred to them after the acquisition, but a recent development raises the question of whether a new step is being taken in this regard.
Nibel posted that Sony has filed for the trademark registration of Sunset Overdrive in the US. According to the application information, the Sunset Overdrive brand has been registered by Sony on April 26, 2021. This raised the issue of whether something new was planned for the brand.
Insomniac Games was eager to develop a sequel to Sunset Overdrive; At least a few years ago, they hadstatements to do so. They complained at the time about not being able to find a publisher. Now that we’re under Sony’s wing, they might have said let’s try our luck again, maybe 🙂
On the other hand, sony’s application may also be standard procedure. After all, they bought a studio, and it’s only natural that they want to retain the brand rights to the products developed by this studio.
What this registration means will become clear with the announcements from Sony in the coming period.
