Microsoft made a big splash this week by announcing it would buy Activision Blizzard in a $68.7 billion deal. Speaking at an investor event, Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer said the acquisition was not about short-term earnings and plans. Spencer: “This acquisition is not the product of a short-term plan and earnings. We saw activision blizzard’s road map. What the teams are going to create and the company’s moves in the years to come are incredible. We are extremely enthusiastic about this situation.”
Spencer continued: “We’ve seen a strong performance recently from our existing ZeniMax and Xbox Games Studios. It’s an advantage for us to have great series in Activision Blizzard. I am personally very excited to have the opportunity to work directly with the dedicated and passionate teams at Call of Duty. With Blizzard, King and each of the studios across the company, we’ll reach new heights and more players.
We want to put the players at the heart of the products we make. By reaching new audiences, we will take care to bring innovative experiences. For our existing plans, we will support Activision Blizzard’s products with our Cloud Gaming and Game Pass subscription services.”
