Outriders developer People Can Fly has not yet received any royalties from Square Enix, more than four months after the game’s release, so it doesn’t know how many copies the game has sold.
According to the agreement between People Can Fly and Square Enix, the first royalty payment for the game will be made 45 days after the release date, august 16. However, this date has passed and no payment has been made yet, which may mean that the game has not yet instraced the costs of Square Enix.
Sebastian Wojciechowski “We don’t have the sales figures for Outriders. We estimate that we sold approximately two to three million, we assumed that this was a result that could guarantee profitability… but the fact that there is no payment from the publisher must indicate that the situation is different according to Square Enix.”
It is also very interesting that the developer team is completely unaware of the level of success of the game. Wojciechowski says that working with a publisher has its advantages as well as such drawbacks, noting that being left unaware of the sales figures also outweighs the idea of publishing their own games in the future.
People Can Fly hopes to receive its first royalty payments later this year, despite their frustration.
Square Enix did not give a net sales figure, but said it had 3.5 million users following the game’s release. Of course, the fact that the game is included in Game Pass in this number of users must have had a big impact.
