John Hight’s Developers Conference “Warcraft’s First 30 Year: The speech of a Game Universe’s creation” presented important information on historical trends in Wow’s subscription numbers. According to Hight, World of Warcraft numbers subscription is followed by a consistent model depending on the release of expansion packages. With each new expansion package, there is an increase in subscriptions, and then for several months, these numbers gradually fall. Although this decline has been interrupted from time to time with large updates and additions published in the interval periods, the overall trend is reduced until the next expansion package comes out.
This information shows that the World of Warcraft, which is named as “leader game” is actually in a continuous regeneration and interest cycle. The emergence of other games called “Wow killers” is not an obstacle to the long-term success of Wow. On the contrary, the continuous updating of the game and enriching it with new content, keeps the player base live and reinforces the leadership of Wow in the MMO world.
